Tennerton United Methodist Church celebrates century of service

TENNERTON -- Motorists driving by Tennerton United Methodist Church realized something special was happening. Balloons led pedestrians to a large banner on the structure's top step declaring that Aug. 20 was the church's 100th anniversary.
About 100 people turned out for the celebration, including friends, family and former pastors.
Pastor Dwayne Brown opened the ceremony with a welcome to all in attendance as well as those participating at home. Church history was read by Candy George.
Brown was also joined in this service by Tennerton UMC Lay Leader Joe McDaniels, as well as Greenbrier Wesleyan District Superintendent Rev. Rick Swearengin.
Previous pastors and spouses were recognized and acknowledged. A memorial service for those who have gone on to glory was conducted by Rev. Swearengin.
A special service of baptism and confirmation was held, with Mary Alma Ann Carson being baptized and joining the church.
Bishop Steiner Ball performed the baptismal service for Carson's infant daughter, Josephine.
The Bishop offered a sermon, "Valuable."
Each family in attendance received a booklet of pictures, history, remembrances and memorials to those who made the church their home in the past 100 years. A bookmark with past history and present information was also given to attendants.
A covered dish luncheon was enjoyed. Topping the meal were three white cakes with filling, each proclaiming the church's 100-year status. Tables were decorated with white and gold clothes on which a vase of red carnations was arranged on a red table runner.
Following lunch, Soldiers of the Cross ministered to the crowd with their blue grass gospel. Rev. Dwayne Lowther blessed the crowd with his photography skills.
Members said their prayer is the church will be a valuable asset to thecommunity for another 100 years and beyond.
In the church's 100 years, a total of 31 pastors have served the congregation, spending from one to 15 years in the post.
The longest-serving pastor was Rev. William Eskew, who ministered to the congregation from 1975 to 1990.
