CHARLESTON -- Two area schools are ranked in the top 40 of U.S. News & World Report's list of the best high schools in West Virginia.
The magazine ranked 130 high schools in West Virginia, with Morgantown High School receiving the No. 1 ranking.
Tucker County High School was the highest-ranked of our local schools, at 34th on the list.
TCHS has a 91% graduation rate, and an AP participation rate of 17%. The school has an enrollment of 288, the list states.
Pocahontas County High School was also ranked within the top 40, at 39th.
PCHS has a 90% graduation rate and an enrollment of 295, according to the list. The school's AP participation rate is 27%.
Philip Barbour High School is ranked 54th on the list.
PBHS has a graduation rate of 90% and an enrollment of 636. The school's AP participation rate is 15%.
Elkins High School is ranked 68th on the list.
EHS boasts a graduation rate of 94% and an enrollment of 792, the list states. The AP participation rate at the school is 16%.
Buckhannon-Upshur High School came in at 74th on the list.
BUHS has a graduation rate of 93% and an enrollment of 1,202. The school's AP participation rate is 16%.
Tygarts Valley Middle/High Schools is tied with 18 other schools for the ranking of 92-109th.
The TVM/HS graduation rate is 98%, and the school's total enrollment is 257.
The school's AP participation rate is 16%.
Five other area schools were included on the list but were not ranked.
Harman Elementary/High School was among the unranked schools.
Harman has a graduation rate 100% and an enrollment of 48, the list states.
Pickens Elementary/High School was also unranked.
Pickens has a graduation rate of 100% and an enrollment of 6.
Also unranked but appearing on the list were:
West Virginia Childrens Home, enrollment of 12;
Elkins Mountain School, enrollment of 38;
Randolph County Alternative Center, enrollment of 12.
The magazine said it rated the high schools by a system that took into account:
