ELKINS - The Upshur County School System scored below the state average in both math and English Language Arts in the state's Balanced Scorecard results for the 2022-23 school year.
As a whole, Upshur County's public school students tested at 49% in English Language Arts, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 55%, which partially met the standard.
Upshur students tested at 43% in math, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 51% in math, which partially met the standard.
The statistics were released as part of the statewide Balanced Scorecard, provided by the West Virginia Department of Education. The Balanced Scorecard process has been in place since the 2017-18 school year.
At the grade school level, in Upshur County, four schools partially met the standard for English Language Arts: Tennerton Elementary at 55%, Washington District Elementary at 54%, French Creek Elementary at 53%, and Rock Cave Elementary at 50%.
The remaining Upshur grade schools did not meet the standard for ELA: Buckhannon Academy Elementary at 49%, Union Elementary at 42%, and Hodgesville Elementary at 41%.
Three Upshur grade schools partially met the standard for math: Tennerton at 59%, French Creek at 55%, and Washington District at 55%.
The other Upshur grade schools did not meet the standard for math, including Rock Cave at 48%, Buckhannon Academy at 45%, Hodgesville at 40%, and Union at 40%.
Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School did not meet the standard for ELA, at 48%, or for math, at 39%.
Upshur County's high school, Buckhannon-Upshur High School, partially met the standard for ELA, at 50%, but did not meet the standard for math, scoring 36%.
According to the Balanced Scorecard, Upshur County's public schools have a total enrollment of 3,774. The county's attendance rate is 89%, while the graduation rate is 95%.
Between federal, state and local allocations, a total of $12,983.88 is spent per student in Upshur County's public schools, according to the Balanced Scorecard information.
