Kids trick-or-treat downtown businesses

ELKINS -- Hundreds of children dressed in their favorite costumes took over several downtown city streets on Saturday to participate in events celebrating Halloween.
Elkins Main Street hosted downtown trick-or-treating for children. For the entire two hours the event took place from noon to 2 p.m., lines of youngsters and their parents lined the Davis Avenue and Third Street sidewalks.
"Today has been a really nice turnout and we've seen all kinds of cute costumes, including some goblins and witches," Elkins Main Street Executive Director Lissa Eason told The Inter-Mountain. "It's nice to see everyone having a good time and we are excited that so many children came out for this event."
Although the aforementioned streets were the top two destinations for trick-or-treaters, many other businesses throughout downtown took part in the afternoon event.
"I want to say thank you to all of the businesses downtown who participated in this event and provided candy, treats and trinkets for all the kids," said Elkins-Randolph County Chamber Director Lisa Wood. "It's a big deal for the community to come together like this and have a great time."
Several businesses and churches that are located outside the heart of downtown also set up tables and handed out candy to children. A member of the Elkins Police Department was distributing candy from the back of his police cruiser and Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco handed out candy outside of City Hall.
"We had a tremendous turnout today and there've been a ton of children coming through and getting candy from us," Marco told The Inter-Mountain. "We really like doing this in the daylight because we get to see and enjoy all the costumes.
"It's tremendous to see the streets full of people, and the good thing is that they are all walking in the community, so they get to see everything we have to offer downtown. It's been a tremendous day for everyone."
The Randolph County Humane Society hosted an adoption event billed as "Howl-O-Ween" at the Seneca Mall Atrium Saturday. Later in the evening the First United Methodist Church hosted its annual Fall Festival.
The event held at the Methodist Church featured a number of activities for children at the church's location on Kerens Avenue. There was trunk-or-treating across the street from the church and inside there were bounce houses, games and food. There were also hay-rides that took children and their parents around downtown.
Elkins residential trick-or-treating will take place on Halloween night from 6-8 p.m.
