ELKINS -- For the past 40 years, the First United Methodist Church Women of Faith have raised money for local charities with their annual Country Store sale each fall.
This year's event will be offered for two days on Nov. 4 and 5 in the church's basement on Kerens Avenue. The Country Store will be open on the first day, Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on the second day, Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon.
"We've been doing this event longer than we can count," Women of Faith member Jerri Snyder told The Inter-Mountain. "It has evolved over a period of time and we used to do it twice a year, once during the spring, and once during the fall. And we typically have lunch with it, but this year we decided to have the sale by itself."
Snyder said the event, which features many brand-new items, is billed as the Country Store because the prices are low as in a country setting.
"Everything is donated and the only thing we don't take is clothing," Snyder said. "We always have lots of decorations for Christmas, many kitchen items, and a lot of glassware and linens. We recently had a couple families move out of the area and they donated to us. And we have a lot of things still in the original packages with price tags on them."
Much of the funding taken in from the event goes to various organizations throughout Randolph County.
"Most of the money stays local, we donate to many of the regular charities here in town," said Snyder. "We give to the Homeless Shelter, Helping Hands, Centers Against Violence, the Boy Scouts and Tyrand, to name a few. Most of the charities around town get something from the money we raise at the Country Store event."
Each year the event has become more popular, and Snyder said she expects that trend to continue this year.
"We have a very supportive community and they look forward to this sale each year," she said. "We usually have a line outside the church with people waiting to get in before that sale even starts."
Other items that are typically found at the Country Store sale include baskets, books, toys, tools, small furniture items and more.
