ELKINS -- The streets of downtown Elkins will be taken over by goblins, ghouls and everything in between when the annual business trick-or-treating event officially returns on Saturday.
This is the first year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that Elkins Main Street has hosted the event.
"Everyone is excited about us bringing this back, because we hadn't done the business trick-or-treat since the start of COVID," Elkins Main Street Executive Director Lissa Eason told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday. "It's going to be for all the downtown businesses. We also have multiple churches and other businesses that are not located directly in the area where everything is happening, bringing tables to the main area and handing out treats."
The event is scheduled to take place from noon to 2 p.m., with Davis Avenue and Third Street being the point of emphasis for trick-or-treaters.
"The event is going to be all over downtown, but the main area will be pretty much that 'T' which is on Third Street and Davis Avenue," said Eason. "But included with the downtown trick-or-treating, several of the businesses on Davis Avenue will be having a Halloween Bash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. That will be in the area where Byrd's House of Donuts and Clementine's Closet is located.
"Those businesses are going to be doing something before the downtown trick-or-treating kicks off, and with everything else that's happening, including the Methodist Church's event in the evening, it's a full day of fun things for kids to take part in."
Also on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Our Town Inc. will have a trick-or-treat tent set up at the Bialek Station Square Office Complex, where it will collect Christmas Tree ornaments while handing out treats to children. During the same time slot, the Randolph County Humane Society will host an adoption event billed as "Howl-O-Ween" at the Seneca Mall Atrium.
Also from 12-2 p.m., a Trunk-or-Treat event will be offered at the Elkins McDonald's restaurant at 446 Randolph Ave. No purchase is necessary to take part in the event.
First United Methodist Church will host its annual Fall Festival from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature a large number of activities for children at the church on Kerens Avenue.
Eason said in addition to everything else happening on Saturday, there will also be a special Inflatable Costume Walk/Run beginning at 7 p.m.
"The event is called the Boo Mile and it begins at 1201 CrossFit and ends at Beander's," said Eason. "Everyone will be in those inflatable costumes and they will run, walk and dance all the way down the street, which will be closed off parade-style during that time. When everyone reaches Beanders, there will be a big blowup archway and a big party."
Registration for the Boo Mile will begin at 6:30 p.m at 1201 CrossFit. Adults and children are both invited to participate in the event.
