Wreck leads to DUI arrest

ALPENA -- A single-vehicle accident next to the Lower Glady Dispersed Campground off the Sully Road in Randolph County led to an arrest Saturday night.
According to a release from Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon, John Sandy was arrested for DUI first offense after he crashed his vehicle into a tree when returning to a campsite after attending the Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins.
Deputy Zachary Pingley of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene and upon his arrival observed a Toyota Tacoma with significant front-end damage, according to the release.
In his report, Pingley stated, "This area consisted of a gravel road with a straight path and that the vehicle had veered to the left and struck a tree… This is not an easy area to wreck a motor vehicle and either alcohol or distracted driving was suspected."
According to the release, Pingley observed one of the passengers of the truck sitting in a field and that he had vomit on his shirt. The other passengers in the vehicle had the odor of an alcoholic beverage.
The release states that after Pingley made contact and began interviewing Sandy, he noticed that the driver had bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Sandy advised the officer that he and the passengers in the truck were on their way back from the Forest Festival and that he was drinking while there.
According to the release, Sandy failed a field sobriety test and he was placed under arrest. He was transported to the Elkins Police Department along with the passengers in the vehicle, who requested a ride back into Elkins due to their means of transportation being wrecked.
Once arriving back in Elkins, the passengers returned to the Forest Festival downtown. Sandy was administered the intoximeter, registering a .11 BAC. He was then transported to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, the report states.
