ELKINS -- The most famous shopping period of the year has arrived for customers looking to take advantage of special deals during the holiday season.

Many local shoppers were out and about in Elkins on "Black Friday."

A host of deal seekers were spotted roaming downtown sidewalks on Friday as loudspeakers played Christmas music and businesses offered up savings. One store in particular, Clementine's Closet on Davis Avenue, had a line waiting outside before the store opened.

"When I opened this morning I had a line out the sidewalk and the store was packed," Clementine's Closet owner Emily Watson told The Inter-Mountain Friday. "We've stayed steady throughout the morning and we've had rushes of people come in and out. People came out and supported the store today and I'm very grateful for that."

Clementine's Closet offered a sale for Black Friday in which customers received a bag and were allowed to stuff it with as much clothes as they could fit for a certain price. The store's vendors were also offering 20% off items.

Another downtown business that had its fair share of customers on Friday – and was offering 20% off - was Kathy's Decorating and Design.

"It's been steady throughout the day," said Kathy's Decorating and Design owner Kathy Vance.

Anita Barb, a customer taking advantage of some of the deals at Kathy's, said, "I never shop on Black Friday, but I do like to shop. Kathy's has a lot of beautiful designs and I encourage everyone to shop downtown. It's important to support all the local businesses."

One downtown business that recently moved to a new location, Coming Around Again, saw a steady stream of customers at its new home on Third Street, across from the Citizens Bank drive-thru, on Friday.

"We've been busy this morning," said owner Janet Smith. "We moved to our new location six weeks ago and things have been going good for us."

Smith has owned the downtown business in Elkins for the past 33 years. It has been located at several Third Street locations during that time, including where Mama Mia's currently is located, and in the former Montgomery Ward building where MegaCorp Logistics is now located.

A regular customer at Coming Around Again, Melva Robbins, said she doesn't stray far from downtown when she goes shopping.

"I always shop downtown and I'm here (Coming Around Again) almost every day," said Robbins. "I always find the best deals when I shop at the downtown businesses."
