ELKINS -- Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman announced the filing dates for the upcoming 2024 election during the County Commission's most recent meeting at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
During the announcements section of the meeting, Wiseman told the commission that the filing period would begin on Monday, Jan. 8 and run until Saturday, Jan. 27. Those wishing to file can do so between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. until noon on the final day of the filing period.
"A lot of races get filed through the secretary of state's office," Wiseman said. "For my office to file it would be for county commission, which you have to live in the Cheat District to run for commission this time; prosecuting attorney; accessor; magistrate; sheriff; surveyor; board of education; and conservation district supervisor. Those are all the ones that will be filing through my office. Everyone else files with the Secretary of State, like for House of Delegates and judge."
The filing fees, and the incumbents currently filling the seats, for the upcoming election include: Randolph County Commission, Cheat District (David Kesling), filing fee of $447.22;
Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney (Michael Parker), filing fee of $1,163.01;
Randolph County Sheriff (Rob Elbon), filing fee of $559.79;
Randolph County Assessor (Phyllis Yokum), filing fee of $559.79;
Randolph County Magistrate (Tracy Harper, Ben Shepler, Mike Dyer), filing fee of $632;
Randolph County Board of Education, Tygart District (Amanda Smith), filing fee of $25;
Randolph County Board of Education, Elkins District (Rachel Anger), filing fee of $25;
Randolph County Surveyor (Leon Mallow), filing fee of $10;
and Randolph County Conservation District Supervisor (James Daniel Dean), filing fee of $10.
"The filing fees are determined by a percentage of each position's salary," Wiseman said.
The primary election is scheduled for May 14. Early voting will take place from May 1 to May 11. The general election is set for Nov. 5, with early voting scheduled for Oct. 23 through Nov. 2. Those wishing to vote early will be able to do so at the Wees Annex on Randolph Avenue in Elkins, and at the Russell Memorial Public Library in Mill Creek.
"After we get through the filing period, we have to get all the names certified that are going to be on the ballot," Wiseman said. "If anyone has any questions about filing, they can give my office a call and we will help you with anything. We have the filing packets together and ready for anybody who wants to come in and pick one up."
