ELKINS -- Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas, executive vice president at Davis & Elkins College, has been selected as the 24th president at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC.
President-Elect Thomas will serve as the institution's first female president in the University's 175-year history. She will begin her new role on March 11.
D&E President Chris A. Wood stated, "This is a well-deserved honor for Dr. Thomas. During her six-plus years at D&E, she has taken on increasing responsibilities and provided exceptional leadership in multiple areas of the institution.
"From personal experience, I can attest that to be selected as a president for a college or university is a high honor and a true affirmation of one's gifts and graces to lead. While I am personally sorry to see her leave D&E, and I am most grateful for her partnership with me over the past several years, and I am overjoyed for her professionally and personally. The Board of Trustees at Chowan has made a wise choice and they have gained a natural and talented leader for this North Carolina private university."
In her role as the Executive Vice President at Davis and Elkins College, Thomas has been responsible for enrollment management, marketing and communications, oversight of the dean of student life, dining services, compliance, and special assignments from the president.
President-elect Thomas brings an extensive background in university and foundation management from both her time at Davis & Elkins as well as her previous positions within higher education over her distinguished career. She is equipped with the leadership skills that are essential to leading Chowan University into the future.
Reflecting on her tenure at Davis & Elkins, Thomas said, "There are no words that can adequately express how much my time here at D&E has meant to me. The chance to work with such amazing people and accomplish so many important things for this truly special place has been a privilege. President Wood provided me with an opportunity to make a difference, and I sincerely hope I have done so. Thank you to the campus and the community for their unwavering support of the efforts we set into motion. I know the momentum will continue."
