Highland Adventist School presents annual Christmas play

ELKINS -- The Highland Adventist School recently presented its annual student Christmas play at the Randolph County Arts Center.
Nearly 30 students from the school participated in the play, which was titled "Christmas at Bethlehem Gulch." The play is an Old West musical based around a group of kids who arrive at Bethlehem Gulch for their annual Christmas Party and while there, they learn the true meaning of the season.
"It's story is based around some kids from New York City that come to a dude ranch and they are expecting a certain experience," said Highland Adventist School Principal Cheryl Jacko. "They thought they were going to a cattle ranch to ride horses. But it turned out to be a sheep ranch where they learned about the story of Jesus."
Jacko said the school's students handled the entire production of the play themselves.
"Our orchestra played music during the play and our students also created the set and made all the costumes," she said. "We even had some of the students working the lights on the stage. We are proud of the outstanding work of the students and want to thank Dani Cade from the Arts Center for her hospitality, and Barry Scott for running audio for the play."
The play was directed by Stacy Blanzy, who is a part of the school's Christian Fine Arts Program. The Highland String Orchestra, under the direction of Becca Jacko, consists of six students.
Jacko said she would like to have different plays throughout the year that feature the school's students.
"We feel like there's a real place for Christian drama in the community," she said. "We do the Christmas play every year and sometimes we do other plays, but we would like to expand it even more."
Students from Highland Adventist School were scheduled to carol for residents at Nella's at Autumn Lake Healthcare this week, and are currently collecting clothes and personal care items for the homeless this holiday season.
The Highland Adventist School is a small PK-12 school that has been serving students in North Central West Virginia since 1988. The school is operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
