MONTROSE - A Randolph County man has been charged with a felony after a vehicle fire on Tuesday.

Brett Arbogast has been charged with starting fire on lands of another.

According to a release from Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon, an officer was sent to Mule Hollow Road Tuesday to investigate a call about a car on fire. "The caller (could) hear explosions from the fire," the release states.

Once on the scene, the officer observed a Nissan Versa "fully engulfed in flames," the release states. "The fire had also spread to the grass and brush in the surrounding area."

The officer approached a trailer about 15 yards away from the fire, in which Arbogast "was laying down on the bed. He had his hands near his head, with a Scripto lighter in one of the hands," the release states. Arbogast allegedly told officers that "he set a vehicle on fire with the lighter."

An officer took custody of the lighter and placed Arbogast under arrest, the release states. Other residents of the trailer told police that Arbogast "got the Nissan Versa stuck in the vegetation and asked for assistance. They could not help him out. That is when he willfully made the decision to light the vehicle on fire," the release states.

"The property where this fire started does not belong to Brett Arbogast and he did not have consent to start the fire," according to the release. "The fire also boarders the property of another individual. The Fire Marshall’s Office was notified of the fire and will be investigating with GPS to see if part of the fire did spread to this property as well."

The Leading Creek Fire Department put out the blaze, police said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
