ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission approved the final two payment applications for the pool and splash pad project at the Elks Lodge during its regular meeting Thursday at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
The Randolph County Community Pool and Splash Pad officially opened this spring. The commission has now made all the scheduled payments for the $2,163,372 project. The RCC did, however, hold off on the final two payments until planned work at the facility was complete.
"We held back 10 percent of the total cost to make sure everything got done," Commission President David Kesling said. "We wanted to wait until the cover officially arrived and was installed, which it is now. And we were waiting on the kiddie slide, which was being redesigned all summer long."
Kesling and fellow commissioners Chris See and Cris Siler unanimously approved the final two payments. The first was payment No. 11 and was for the amount of $61,568. The second, payment No. 12, was for $237,279.
"Application No. 11 was for the slide and other miscellaneous items that we had to take care of that came up during the construction," said Kesling. "The second payment (No. 12) was for the percentage that we held back to make sure everything got done."
Kesling said the designers helped winterize the pool, and have agreed to come back and help get it ready for the start of the season next spring.
"We ran into a little bit of a problem at the start of the pool season this year, because we had a problem with the heater," Kesling said. "We won't have that problem next year and will be able to get the water heated right up at the start of the season."
Both payment applications approved during the meeting will be taken from the county budget's community development line item.
"The community development line is a line that we have been adding to since I've been on the commission," Kesling said. "This is money that we have been saving to get this pool and we are happy that the pool is now 100 % paid for. We are looking forward to next season and not having any of the delays we had this year.
"I've had people from all over the county talk to me about visiting the pool this summer, so we are excited to see what 2024 will bring."
