CHARLESTON -- Grant funds were approved for a Canaan Valley sewer project, and a Whitmer water project was given the go-ahead to pursue funding during a West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council meeting.

The Council announced $1.4 million in funding for sewer and water projects around the state at its December meeting.

The Canaan Valley Public Service District was approved for a $500,000 grant to extend sewer service to approximately 250 economic development units (EDUs)/customers in the areas of Winwood, Deerfield Village and Canaan Village in Tucker County.

These funds, along with money from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and other funding programs, will provide $4.4 million for this project.

Also approved by the Council was a $200,000 grant and $200,000 loan to the Logan PSD in Logan County. The funds will be used to replace the existing telemetry for its water system.

The Council also approved a $500,000 grant for improvements to the Town of Wardensville sewer system. This money, along with funds from the CWSRF, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Hardy County Commission, Wardensville ARPA funds, and other funding programs, will provide $4.2 million for this project.

The council also approved technical reviews and requests to pursue funding for an additional 10 sewer and water projects. The approval of these reviews and requests helps cities, municipalities and public service districts save taxpayer money and keep their projects moving.

Among the ten projects were found to be technically feasible and approved to pursue funding was the Whitmer Water Association in Randolph County, which will become customers of the City of Elkins. The water system and treatment plant  improvements project is estimated to cost $2.3 million.
