ELKINS – Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco recently presented a plaque of commendation to former Municipal Judge Robert “Bob” Jones, who retired from his post with the city at the end of 2023.
Jones, who had served as municipal judge since 2014, was recognized with the plaque for his long-standing service to the community and for upholding the principles of justice for Elkins residents.
“Bob has done a great job of serving our community for a long time and we really appreciate that,” Marco told The Inter-Mountain. “He has been a pillar of the community for a long time and has been someone I could go to and talk to for a variety of reasons. We were happy to honor him for his outstanding service and selfless commitment to the betterment of our city.”
A ceremony for Jones took place during a recent Elkins City Council meeting at City Hall, with council members, city officials, friends and family. Jones himself served on council from 1983 to 1992.
“Looking back, we also appreciate all the time that Bob served on council,” Marco said. “We are happy that he decided to continue serving the city as municipal judge after his time was done over as a council member for all those years. We hope his example will inspire others to step forward and serve our community.”
Jones also served as an elementary school teacher at Third Ward and North Elementary schools for 33 years. He also worked at Elkins Builders Supply and ran for Randolph County Commission last year.
Marco said efforts are underway to fill the vacant position created by Jones’ retirement, and that the city should have a new judge in place in the near future.
“We posted the position, accepted applications, and conducted interviews,” Marco said. “We should have the new hiring finalized very soon.”
