ELKINS -- Just one candidate each has filed for the two House of Delegates positions and one state Senate seat representing Randolph County that will be on the ballot for the May 14 primary election.
The District 11 state Senate seat currently held by incumbent Republican Robert Karnes will be on the ballot. Karnes, however, had not filed to run for re-election by press time Friday.
Longtime Randolph County Development Authority Director Robbie Morris, a Republican, so far is the only candidate who has filed to run for the open District 11 seat.
Morris has served as director of the RCDA and the West Virginia Wood Technology Center for the past 12 years.
Before filing, Morris said he confirmed with legal counsel that he could continue to serve as the RCDA director if elected.
Karnes was elected to the State Senate in November 2020, defeating Democratic candidate Denise Campbell.
Bill Hamilton currently holds the other District 11 state Senate seat, which will not be on the ballot until 2026.
Both House of Delegate seats representing Randolph County will be up for grabs in this year's election.
In District 67, incumbent Republican Delegate Elias Coop-Gonzalez has filed to seek reelection. At this point, he is the only candidate to file for the seat.
In District 66, incumbent Republican Delegate Ty Nestor announced last year that he would not seek re-election, and has instead filed to run for the recently created second Circuit Judge position in Randolph County.
The only candidate to file to run for the District 66 seat at this point is Mill Creek resident Jonathan B. Kyle, a Republican.
The candidate filing period for the May 14 primary election will continue until midnight on Saturday, Jan. 27.
The primary election is scheduled for May 14, and early voting will take place in Randolph County from May 1 to May 11.
The General Election will be held on Nov. 5, with early voting scheduled for Oct. 23 through Nov. 2.
Randolph County voters seeking to cast their ballots early for the Primary Election can do so at the Weese Annex on Randolph Avenue in Elkins, or at the Russell Memorial Library in Mill Creek.
