Historic hotel installs new sign

ELKINS -- As part of the ongoing renovation project at the historic Tygart Hotel, a new sign has been placed along the front of the historic structure.
The lighted LED flag-mounted sign, which is 3 feet by 20 feet in size, is known as a blade sign or projection sign. This type of sign seeks to attract the attention of those who don't see the storefront directly when they are either walking or driving parallel to the building front.
"The sign looks amazing," Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday. "My wife and I drove through town Saturday evening and it was incredible to see it lit up down the street.
"It's a fantastic addition to our community, especially in that block (on Davis Avenue). It really looks great when you drive through and see the C.J. Maggie’s sign lit up on one side of the street and the Tygart on the other."
Marco added that the finishing touches are being put on the Tygart Hotel renovation, and that he believes it will be opening soon.
"We are very excited to be a step closer to the competition of the Tygart," Marco said. "The weather hasn't been the best for the crew working on it the last couple of weeks, but I think they are very, very close. Every day we are getting a step closer to the Tygart opening for business."
Marco said the hotel's new sign met all the requirements, rules, and regulations the City of Elkins has in place for signs in the downtown area.
"They took it to the planning commission and everything was approved and met all the requirements," Marco said. "Our code enforcement officer met with them and approved a permit to put the sign up."
The mayor said there are some sign regulations in place that the city may have to take a look at moving forward.
"There are some restrictions on certain sizes of signs, depending how high they are," Marco said. "We are reviewing that in the planning commission, and having conversations about how it's a disadvantage to some businesses who invest in our community. There are conversations ongoing about the requirements we have in place right now and those might be modified slightly going forward."
Once complete, the Tygart Hotel will offer queen, double queen and king rooms, as well as king suites. Amenities will include complimentary Wi-Fi access and convenient mobile check-in options.
The 56-room boutique hotel will also feature a full bar and restaurant, the Oxley House, and a banquet room. The Tygart Hotel was constructed in 1906 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"Whenever I travel around the state, there's a lot of people out there talking about the Tygart Hotel," said Marco. "People are very anxious to come check it out and see what all it has to offer. They are going to have a restaurant in the hotel from my understanding, so that will be another option for people. And it's going to be a great place to stay when people come into town for some of our events like the Ramp Festival and Forest Festival. We are very excited about it."
