PHILIPPI -- The City of Philippi is currently seeking artists and musicians from around the area to take part in its Annual Arts Stroll.
The event, which is sponsored by Main Street Philippi, is scheduled for April 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The Arts Stroll has been held annually since its inception in 2011. It will take place on Main Street in downtown Philippi.
"The idea of the Arts Stroll is to bring arts to the community and have people enjoy it and participate," Main Street Philippi Director Tammy Stemple told The Inter-Mountain. "We want everyone to have a good evening of just walking around downtown and visiting the stores and listening to some great music."
More than 20 exhibit sites will be available for artists to display their talents, which will include visual, musical, performance, literary and fabric arts.
"We are currently recruiting artists and musicians," Stemple said. "We welcome any kinds of artists and genres of musicians to take part in the event. Whoever comes out, we will put them somewhere and we don't charge anything to participate. Musicians can put out tip jars, though, and get money that way, and if artists want to sell any of their items, they are free to do so."
Visitors to the Arts Stroll will have the opportunity to visit an abundance of exhibits and enjoy a wide variety of music scattered across downtown.
"We will have music and art in different locations, and some locations will have both," Stemple said. "Some people want to be outside and some might play music on the gazebo. We will have art and musical performers all over town and the more we get the better. We usually have several hundred people visit the downtown area during the three-hour event."
Stemple said last year's event had a good turnout, noting the weather typically factors into how many people come out for the Arts Stroll.
"We had a rather large crowd last year and each year the weather plays a part in how many people come out," Stemple said. "If it's rainy we typically have a little less traffic."
Stemple added that no one will be turned away from participating in the event, but that it is recommended that artists and performers sign up by early March.
"The only reason we would like them to let us know if they are coming is because we make a rack card with a little map on it that shows the locations of music and art," Stemple said. "But we will accept people after that and we also make a little handout that lists those who didn't get in on time to get on the rack card."
