ELKINS -- The Randolph Arts Center will host two exhibits with an opening reception on Friday from 5-7 pm.
Executive Director Dani Cade and Macie Higgins, artist and board member, directed the installation of this exhibition with a group of Davis & Elkins College art students and art professors.
"This is an excellent way for art students to gain experience in the professional development process," Cade stated.
The Arts Center is excited to have Kevin Woodcock, professional artist, displaying his exhibition titled "Revisiting Penpoctura," a follow-up to his solo exhibit in November 2015.
"His fresh series of paintings and prints are colorful and it is exciting to see professional artists continuously creating new bodies of artwork," Cade said.
Woodcock's exhibit will display until Friday, March 1.
Woodcock is a local artist residing in Elkins and an art professor at D&E College. "Penpoctura Revisited" is a series of artwork created based on places visited in "Penpoctura," made up of the four counties including Pendleton, Pocahontas, Tucker and Randolph.
"I often seek refuge from the daily world's turmoil and troubles to be at peace in these places. I can focus on the simple joys of watching fish swim in a clear brook, looking at a waterfall or witnessing the sun light make the leaves glow green, red, yellow or orange. 'Penpoctura' is a place to go to recharge your mental and internal battery so to speak. This place has given me so much inspiration to create artwork," Woodcock said.
Davis & Elkins Senators Art Student Exhibition coincides with this solo exhibition.
More than 39 D&E students will display close to 90 pieces of their creative works. The work is that of student art majors, minors and other non-art majors taking general art elective classes. This exhibition features a variety of mediums.
"All of our students work very hard to create what they see in their mind when they start working on their artwork," Woodcock said. "The process of making art involves creative thinking, daily observation and many practice drawings to work out the final outline of their idea. Sometimes that idea changes in the course of creating, and the students must figure out how to make their work adapt to those changes. Creating artwork involves lots of trouble shooting on the part of the creator to get it right."
The Creative Art Program at D&E provides a basic background in art, problem solving and the creative process to all students. Students develop an understanding of complex and sophisticated visual language, and are prepared for a professional career in art, teaching art and/or graduate study.
"The students work very hard and take pride in their artwork and this exhibition is an opportunity for them to share it with the community," Woodcock said.
The D&E Creative Art Department faculty is made up of Assistant Professor of Art, Chair Woodcock, Instructor Kory Burns and Adjunct Instructors Desire Watson, Aidan Konhaus, Margaret Bruning, Tessa Garver-Daniels and Natalie Josimovich.
