PHILIPPI -- Barbour County's incumbent sheriff and assessor will face challengers from their own party in the May 14 primary election.
Incumbent Sheriff Brett Matthew Carpenter, a Republican from Philippi, has filed to run for re-election.
Republican challenger Frankie Keener, from Philippi, will also be on the May primary ballot.
Incumbent Assessor Derick A. Spencer, a Republican from Philippi, will be seeking re-election.
Republican challenger Carrie Sponaugle Boyles, from Philippi, is also seeking the assessor's seat.
In the non-partisan Barbour County Board of Education race, Martin G. Durst of Philippi has filed to run for the West District seat, and Adams Starks of Philippi has filed to run for the North District seat.
Two candidates are seeking the BOE's South District seat. Incumbent Adam Starks, of Philippi, and challenger Maureen Lasky-Setchell, of Belington, will both be on the ballot.
In the House of Delegates District 68 race, incumbent Republican Chris Phillips, of Buckhannon, has filed to run for re-election. Republican challenger David Critchfield, of Philippi, will also be on the ballot.
In the State Senate District 14 race, incumbent Randy Smith, of Terra Alta, is being challenged by Mountain Party candidate Betsy Orndoff-Sayers, of Wardensville.
Four Republican candidates from Belington have filed to fight it out for one Barbour County Commission seat in the May 14 primary election.
Incumbent Jamie Carpenter has filed to run for re-election to the South District seat on the commission. Also filing to run for the position are James "Shortbus" Poling, Bob Richardson and Matthew "Matt" Ryan.
Incumbent Andrew "Drew" Phillips, a Republican from Philippi, has filed to run for Barbour County prosecuting attorney. Phillips was appointed to the seat in March 2023, after Thomas Hoxie was appointed as a circuit judge in Barbour and Taylor counties by Gov. Jim Justice.
Incumbent Magistrate Angie Stalnaker, District 1, and incumbent Magistrate Daniel J. "DJ" Harris, District 2, have both filed to run for their respective seats in the May primary.
Incumbent Delbert J. Vandevander, of Volga, has filed to run for the Barbour County Conservation District Supervisor seat. Also filing for the position is Thomas G. Short of Philippi.
The primary election is scheduled for May 14. Early voting will take place from May 1 to May 11.
The general election will be held on Nov. 5, with early voting scheduled for Oct. 23 through Nov. 2.
