ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission has unanimously approved a funding request for the annual Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs event in Elkins.
The free event, which focuses on promoting outdoor recreation and educating youth about the dangers of drug use, is scheduled for May 4 at the Phil Gainer Community Center.
"The message of instilling a love of outdoor recreation and the dangers of drug use is a focal point in our mission," said HOFNOD president Owen Peet. "We want to continue to make this event a staple in our community and we are very excited about this year's event."
Commissioners Cris Siler, David Kesling and Chris See each spoke about how valuable the event is to area youth, and agreed to support HOFNOD with $5,000 in funding for this year's event. The money will be taken from the county's hotel/motel tax line item in the county's budget.
"You guys do a good job and I'm very supportive of the mission that you are on, and what you are doing," said Siler. "This is a great event for all the kids in our area."
More than 800 children attended last year's event, which featured $5,000 worth of door prizes, along with activities, games, informational booths and giveaways, all centered around outdoor activities.
"Last year we had more than a stellar turnout for the 2023 HOFNOD event," Peet said. "The event brought together people and organizations of Randolph County with the sole purpose of providing interactive educational activities for the kids in our community."
A climbing wall, gemstone mine, fishing pond, a snake exhibit, and a birds of prey demonstration were just a few of the many attractions featured in 2023.
"It's because of the county commissioners' support that we can do this event, and for that we are extremely grateful," Peet said. "We are also thankful for our partners in the event such as local law enforcement, the United States Forest Service, Randolph County Tourism, and local businesses. This is a time when everyone can come together to support kids in our community."
Bicycles, fishing poles and kayaks were some of the many items that were given away to children at the event last year.
"This event, as we aim to do every year, is 100 percent free for all participants," Peet said. "From raffle prizes to gemstone mining, every child can participate in everything the event has to offer."
