ELKINS — Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect on felony warrants Friday night after a traffic stop at the Par Mar store next to Chenoweth Creek Road.
Darnell Wayne McBride, 44, was taken into custody on charges of fleeing with reckless indifference and obstructing an officer, both of which are felonies. McBride is currently lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $30,000 cash-only bond.
Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said McBride was pulled over after passing deputies who were actually on their way to serve a warrant on McBride at a residence in the Elkins area.
“He (McBride) had some felony warrants out of Upshur County and we had received a tip about where he was staying in Randolph County,” Elbon said. “We were getting ready to hit the house and he drove past deputies. He was in the passenger’s seat in an automobile with someone else driving.”
Elbon said he was glad McBride wasn’t driving the vehicle, considering he allegedly had fled from police twice before.
“It was good he wasn’t driving, because he had fled in two vehicles in Upshur every time they got after him,” Elbon said. “He’s wrecked a couple cars, so it was good someone else was driving.”
Elbon said the driver of the vehicle pulled over without incident and that deputies Brice Cogar, Zach Pingley and Tyler Knotts were assisted by K-9 Twix and the West Virginia State Police.
“We used the dog in what they call apprehension by presence,” Elbon said. “Verbal commands were given for him (McBride) to exit the vehicle and he complied. The driver was not charged.”
