ELKINS -- Elkins City Council has appointed a new Municipal Court judge.
Rebecca Day, who has served as the Municipal Court clerk and as the interim Municipal Court judge, was appointed during the most recent Elkins City Council meeting.
"Miss Day, she was recommended by the Personnel Committee at our last meeting," First Ward Councilman Rob Chenoweth said during the city council meeting. "She currently serves as a municipal clerk.
"She has been doing the job, which as a training, obviously, and a qualification to hit the ground running as a municipal judge," Chenoweth said.. "That's why she was recommended."
"She is currently serving in the interim (judge) position," Mayor Jerry Marco said.
Council approved the appointment unanimously.
"Congratulations," Marco told Day immediately after the vote. "And in case you don't know who our judge is now, please stand up and wave. That is Becky Day. Thank you so much."
Day takes over the position from former Municipal Judge Robert "Bob" Jones, who retired at the end of 2023. Jones had served as municipal judge since 2014.
The wage for the position is $16.72 per hour.
In January, Marco said efforts were underway to fill the vacant position created by Jones' retirement.
"We posted the position, accepted applications, and conducted interviews," Marco said. "We should have the new hiring finalized very soon."
The Elkins Municipal Court hears cases of parking and traffic violations as well as other misdemeanor violations of city ordinances and codes.
Municipal Court is in session on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 2-4:15 p.m.
