ELKINS – The annual Knights of Columbus Lenten Fish Fry at the St. Brendan Catholic Church will get underway Friday at the church's Gathering Hall.

The fish fries will be offered for the next six weeks until March 22, taking place each Friday from 4-7 p.m. and

"We hold the fish fries each year because of Lent," Knights of Columbus member John Meader told The Inter-Mountain. "This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and our Fish Fry always starts the Friday after that. It then runs until the Friday before Good Friday."

The Fish Fry dinners, which are also available for takeout, include pollock, french fries, coleslaw, dessert, bread and a beverage.

"We are going to be serving the same quality fish and sides as we always do," Meader said. "We just got all of our food in for the first Fish Fry and everything will be the same as it has been in the past. Because of the turnout we have at each one, we order fresh food every week."

Meader said the Fish Fry is so popular that they serve between 200 and 300 hundred meals per week.

"The Fish Fry has turned into one of our biggest fundraisers," Meader said. "We get a lot of people from around the area at the fish fries. And a lot of them come every year and each week."

Money raised from the Fish Fry goes toward a host of charities and organizations that the Knights of Columbus help support, including Catholic Charities of Elkins, which provides caring and compassionate services to area people in need.

"The money we raise goes toward all the donations we make throughout the year," Meader said. "Some of it also goes to the church and to a lot of community functions. We do several things with the money we take in, like the Coats for Kids program we did last year. We had six cases of coats that we passed out with that program."

Meader said the fundraiser is a lot of work and if not for the many volunteers who help out, it would not be a success.

"Almost all of the guys in our organization work hard to make sure the Fish Fry is a success," Meader said. "There's a lot of work that goes into having it and it takes a lot of time to put it all together."
