HAS students complete internships

ELKINS -- The Highland Adventist School recently provided two-week career shadowing internships for its students.
The annual internships are part of the required program for all high school students at the private school, which has been serving students in North Central West Virginia since 1988.
After doing career research, students participated in interest and talent inventories and helped the school select local businesses for their internships. Participating businesses allowed the Highland Adventist School interns to observe and sometimes help with the work at the businesses.
"We want our students to be prepared with skills and knowledge that will help them step right into life, or a continued education when they graduate," said Highland Adventist School Principal Cheryl Jacko. "We also hope they will find a career and choose to live in our local area, instead of moving out of state."
This year's participating businesses included: Appalachian Animal Hospital, Elkins Fire Department, Aero Mobile Home Park, Kenmie Computing, New Start Thrift Shop, and Seneca Design.
"We thank all the local businesses who hosted our students for internships this year," Jacko said. "Without them, we could not offer this valuable program for our students."
Through the program, students gain insight into career choices, as well as workplace etiquette and how to be a good employee. The internship training program also instructs students on how to create a professional resume, how to participate successfully in a job interview, how to dress for success, and how to be a good employee.
