BELINGTON -- The Belington Volunteer Fire Department shared a medical update concerning Deputy Chief Mike Hart, who was injured in a one-vehicle accident last week.
Hart was transported to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after the accident on Jan. 26.
According to a recent social media post by the Belington VFD, Hart has been moved to a step-down unit at the hospital and is moving forward slowly.
The post also stated that doctors were working to prevent pneumonia and infection in a scalp injury he sustained in the accident.
According to the post, Hart plans on continuing his firefighting career, saying, "I am not done riding fire trucks."
The accident was reported as a possible vehicle fire at about 4:48 p.m. last Friday on Serpell Avenue in Belington, officials said.
Driving from his home on his way to the fire station, "it is believed Deputy Chief Hart suffered some type of medical emergency which left him unconscious," a social media post states. "His vehicle then accelerated off the roadway, striking a nearby tree head-on.
"Upon arrival, Deputy Chief Hart was found heavily entrapped and was extricated by his fellow firefighters. He was flown to Ruby (Memorial Hospital) with severe injuries."
