ELKINS -- Close to 150 visitors made their way to the Seneca Mall Atrium on Saturday as Our Town Inc. hosted its third annual Spring Expo.
The event, which was free and open to all ages, featured 19 organizations from around the area that set up stations and provided guests with learning activities, games, information and more.
"We had a really good turnout for the expo and I think the kids attending had a very enjoyable day," Our Town volunteer Bobbi Trimboli told The Inter-Mountain. "There were things to do at every station we had and the kids were excited to see Smokey Bear, who was there celebrating his 80th birthday.
"Everything went off without a hitch and we had wonderful helpers from the Davis & Elkins College women's soccer team and the D&E men's tennis team."
Organizations taking part in this year's event include: Emma Scott Garden Club, West Virginia Extension Master Gardeners, Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area, Interact Children's Museum, CLIMB Randolph County, Mountain Heart Community Services, 4-H, West Virginia Birth to Three, West Virginia Master Naturalist Program, U.S. Forest Service, Weaver Enricka MIller, Guilty Pleasures, Elkins Tree Board, Helvetia, GFWC Junior Woman Club of Elkins, Centers Against Violence, and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
"We thought the day was an overall success and we certainly appreciate all the individuals and agencies who are alway willing to participate and interact with the community," Trimboli said. "It was a very positive event and a good way to start the turn of a new season."
Our Town also placed its wooden topiaries along the downtown streets of Elkins this past week. Residents were asked to take wooden flowers home and paint them before they were placed on the topiaries. Our Town received 150 wooden flowers back from the community, which were placed on 15 topiaries.
"We had really good participation with the flowers again this year," Trimboli said.
The next project Our Town is working on is a Volunteer Window that will be at TD's Classic Tees on Third Street. April is National Volunteer Month, so Our Town is asking groups to create displays to be placed in the windows at TD's.
