ELKINS -- The H.W. Daniels American Legion Post 29 will host National Commander Daniel Seehafer at its headquarters on March 26.
Seehafer's visit will coincide with the post's annual birthday celebration that is held each spring. This will be the American Legion's 105th birthday. The event is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
"We are going to host our annual birthday dinner to accommodate the National Commander coming in," Ninth District Commander Donnie Lambert told The Inter-Mountain. "We viewed that there was no sense in having a birthday dinner on March 15 and then having another dinner on March 26, when we could just combine them into one and the National Commander could be the guest speaker."
Seehafer was elected National Commander at the 104th National Convention in Charlotte last August. Seehafer is an ordained minister and earned his membership in the American Legion after serving in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve as a chaplain. He is a member of Post 157 in Horicon, Wisconsin, and has served as Wisconsin's Department Commander and national Chaplain.
"To have the National Commander visit our post is an honor, and I hope people will come and see him speak," Lambert said. "Commander Seehafer will be the first sitting national officer we've had come visit in a number of years."
Seehafer spreads a message of "Make it Personal" when it comes to serving veterans and their families.
The Elkins American Legion has had one member serve as a national officer, when Chester Philipps served as National Vice Commander in 1976-1977.
The American Legion is America's largest veterans service organization. It is built on a promise from men and women who swore with their lives to defend and protect the United States through military service.
The dinner, which will be held in Calain Hall, will feature chicken alfredo, garlic bread, salad and a beverage.
