ELKINS -- An annual community educational event is set for this week.
The Kump Education Center will offer its 14th annual Kump Education Research Seminar at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Learning Lab of the Kump House. The event is free and open to the public.
"The Kump Education Center mission is to promote student learning and enhance teacher excellence," said KEC Director Heather Biola. "The Research Seminar highlights real life teaching experiences and findings."
Two presentations by Davis & Elkins College students are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Students of Dr. Scott Biola and department chair Melanie Gribble will offer a presenation on "The Science of Reading" and "21st Century Strategies for Evaluating Online Sources."
Individual student research posters by Davis & Elkins College education students will be displayed during the event.
"At the Kump Education Center we believe research and service are the two activities that engage student learning most effectively at the college level," Heather Biola said. "We hope to encourage future teachers to recognize the enduring value of thinking critically and logically about teaching and sharing their findings at professional meetings like this."
The Kump Education Center provides professional development for teachers, outdoor education opportunities, and historic restoration guidance. The KEC works with several groups to provide quality hands-on science curriculum.
The entrance to the Optimum Learning Lab is at the rear of the Kump House, located at 401 Randolph Ave. in Elkins, across from Kroger. Parking is available behind the building with easy access off Seneca Road.
