Hundreds enjoy free meal, fellowship

ELKINS -- Close to 300 residents were treated to soup, bread and the company of others during the third annual CommUnity Table event on Davis Avenue in downtown Elkins this week.
The event was free to the public and featured soup made by local restaurants and organizations.
"We had a fantastic turnout for this year's event," Beander's manager Desire Neffin-Watson, an organizer of the event, told The Inter-Mountain. "We were very blessed with good weather and the participation from both local businesses, and the community, was fantastic."
Tables were placed together down the center of Davis Avenue, forming one large table where those taking part could enjoy their meal.
Many local restaurants put together some of their best soup creations for the event: Beander's (zesty potato and ramp potato soup), Delmonte Market (tortellini soup), El Gran Sabor (leak soup), Clementine's Cantina (sopa de clementine), Smoke on the Water (brisket chili), Davis & Elkins College (stuffed pepper soup), Jimbo's (chili), Alpine Lodge (seafood bisque), U.S. Food Service (potato and chickennoodle), Oxley House (tomato basil bisque and french onion), El Toro Steakhouse (tomato cream basil), Mona's Eggrolls (chicken arroz caldo and pancit), The Lunch Box (cheddar broccoli south and veggie beef), Kitchen Creations by Helzer (tuscan sausage with beans and kale), and Gingrollsandpancit (chicken Tinola filipino soup).
The event was sponsored by Beander's Restaurant and Tavern, Our Town Inc., Legacy Insurance and Financial Services, and Masterpiece Rentals.
"Now that people have had a taste of what the restaurants who participated have to offer, hopefully they will go and pay them a visit," said Neffin-Wilson. "Where people spend their money matters, it matters to these local businesses a lot. They are the ones who are giving back to the community."
Great Harvest Bakery and Cafe, Guilty Pleasures, Papa Johns, Shop n Save at Tygart Valley Mall, and Performance Foods Service provided bread for the event. Water was provided by Performance Foods and Legacy Insurance, while Burlington United Methodist Family Services donated Lemonade. The Delmonte Market provided flowers and Clementine's Cantina donated napkins. Soup bowls were provided by R.D. Wilson Sons Company.
"What really moves me is that I had a lot of people reach out to me and ask if I needed any help," said Neffin-Wilson. "We had a lot of people just show up and help out with the event, and that's a big part of it, the community togetherness.
"Everyone pitched in and made it happen and I've already had people reach out to me and tell me that they would like to be involved next year. I really think the event is going to continue to grow moving forward. Hopefully it will be a staple event for Elkins."
