Organizers Kay Hart and Jane Birdsong are hoping for good weather, and invite families and people of all ages to enjoy an afternoon activities, games, crafts and useful give-aways.
"With so many participants this year, we know families will enjoy all the games and activities we have planned," Hart and Birdsong said in a press release.
Participating groups include Elkins Tree Board, Tygart Valley Master Naturalists, Master Gardener Volunteers, Interact Children's Museum, Project Learning Tree, Friends of Trees, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forestry Service, Our Town, Centers Against Violence, Mountain Heart & Birth to Three, Appalachian National Forest Heritage Area, Plant the Seed, Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST), Emma Scott Garden Club, and GREENWORKS of Davis & Elkins College.
Woodsy the Owl will greet children as they roam from one activity to another.
As attendees stop by to pick up their free reusable shopping bag, and many other useful items, they should be sure to register for six door prize drawings, which will be announced every 20 minutes.
Organizers have expressed their gratitude to the Elkins Parks & Recreation department, the Randolph County Commission, and the Randolph County Solid Waste Authority for their assistance in making it all happen.
In March, the Randolph County Commission approved $500 in funding support for the local Earth Day celebration. Hart told the commission that funding was needed in order to purchase items for the event, which is being hosted by the West Virginia Naturalists Tygart Valley Chapter.
The Earth Day worldwide celebration was first observed in 1970 to demonstrate support for environmental protections of our waterways, our forests, soils, oceans, human communities, plant and animal habitats.
