BUCKHANNON - The Pallottine Foundation of Buckhannon announced more than $60,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations Thursday.
The Foundation has awarded 10 nonprofit organizations -- serving Barbour, Lewis, Randolph, Upshur and Webster counties -- with grants through its Healthy Communities Initiative.
"The nonprofits receiving Healthy Communities awards this year provide important nutritional services and health programming in the counties we serve," said Laura Boone, executive director of the Pallottine Foundation of Buckhannon. "We look forward to partnering in their work and helping them build their own capacity to serve others."
The annual Healthy Communities Initiative supports funding requests up to $25,000 that "address a variety of community needs relating to health and wellness, capacity building, spiritual and pastoral care, food insecurity, substance use disorder and tobacco prevention and cessation," according to information provided by the Foundation.
Organizations awarded Healthy Communities grants include:
∫ Catholic Charities WV ($11,217) – Catholic Charities WV will implement the Supporting Wellness at Pantries (SWAP) model at its Webster Springs food pantry. The organization will purchase standard food items and healthier items, such as lean protein and produce, for the pantry.
∫ Heart and Hand House ($6,600) – Heart and Hand House will purchase produce and market bags to implement a Kids' Market at its Barbour County Community Garden Market location. The market will give elementary-aged students in the county access to fresh fruits and vegetables and provide nutrition education.
∫ Meals on Wheels of Randolph County ($2,500) – Meals on Wheels of Randolph County will purchase food for its nutrition program, which provides home-delivered meals to older adults living within Elkins city limits.
∫ Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council ($8,000) – The Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council will provide mileage reimbursement to Senior Companion program volunteers in Barbour, Lewis, Randolph, Upshur and Webster counties.
∫ Mountain CAP of WV ($1,500) – Mountain CAP of WV will commission the development of three emergency resource cards for the Upshur Housing and Homelessness Coalition to provide to families or individuals in crisis due to housing insecurity.
∫ One Unique Recovery House ($8,674.32) – One Unique Recovery House (OUR House) will purchase new bedding and bath items for residents to assist in OUR House maintaining its West Virginia Alliance for Recovery Residences certification. OUR House will also purchase two laptops for resident use to help build self-sufficiency.
∫ Randolph County Children's Advocacy Center ($1,410.03) – The Randolph County Children's Advocacy Center will contract with the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network to lead a strategic planning retreat.
∫ Seneca Health Services ($5,025) – Seneca Health Services will collaborate with Catholic Charities WV to offer a series of family support workshops for Webster County residents who have been impacted by a loved one's struggle with substance use or suicide.
∫ The Committee on Aging for Randolph County ($7,500) – The Committee on Aging for Randolph County will purchase raw food for its Senior Nutrition Program, which provides congregate, grab-and-go, and home-delivered meals throughout the county.
∫ Upshur Parish House ($8,000) – The Upshur Parish House will purchase turkeys for Thanksgiving to distribute to neighbors in need as part of its holiday meal program.
The Pallottine Foundation of Buckhannon was established with proceeds from the sale of St. Joseph's Hospital, and continues the legacy established by the Pallottine Missionary Sisters of caring for the spiritual, emotional, and physical health of those in the region.
The Foundation focuses its efforts on six primary areas: food insecurity, health and wellness, leadership development, spiritual and pastoral care, substance use disorder, and tobacco use prevention and cessation. Its service area includes Barbour, Lewis, Randolph, Upshur and Webster counties.
