ELKINS -- The West Virginia Railroad Museum will host a grand opening, an Archival Exhibit Opening and the first-ever Railroaders' Reunion later this month.
The event, scheduled for April 27, will be a daylong celebration of the coming season. Officials are excited to present two speakers, local historian and scholar Don Teter, and special guest John Smith, owner of the Durbin Greenbriar Valley Railroad.
Both speakers have extensive knowledge about historical railroading and will participate in a Q&A session after the presentations,. The museum will offer free guided tours throughout the day, and refreshments will be provided.
The event will feature a live music performance on the campus of Davis & Elkins College by Elkins native John Merrill and the Chaga Tea Project.
"The day will be an opportunity to connect with fellow historical railfans and delve into the rich history of West Virginia's railroads," a museum press release states. "Our aim is to give guests an immersive experience while connecting railfans of all ages.
"This event will serve as an example of the importance of preserving memories and fostering meaningful connections within our communities. By coming together to celebrate our shared heritage and experiences, we not only honor the past but also build bridges that connect us in the present and future."
This event is free and open to all.
Schedule of events on April 27 includes:
10 a.m.- 4 p.m. – Free guided tours at the museum
12 p.m.- 1p.m. – Free Refreshments & Fellowship
1 p.m. – WVRRM Annual Meeting
2 p.m. – Special guest Don Teter, local historian and author of "Goin' Up Gandy", will offer a presentation.
3 p.m. – Special guest John Smith, life-time rail fan and C.E.O. of Durbin Greenbriar Valley Railroad, will share his story of becoming a full-time railroading entrepreneur in West Virginia.
4 p.m. – Q&A Session.
7 p.m. – Local singer/songwriter John Merrill will perform with "The Chaga Tea Project" at the historic Boiler House, located on the campus of Davis & Elkins College, to end the day's events. (Recommended $10 donation at the door).
