ELKINS -- The Emma Scott Garden Club will host its 10th annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 18 at the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
The event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature an array of annuals, perennials and houseplants for the public to purchase. A boutique will be offered simultaneously with the Plant Sale and will feature a host of unique items.
The annual sale, which helps fund many of the organization's community projects throughout the year, is free and open to the public.
Visitors to the Arts Center can meet ESGC members and learn more about gardening.
Other than plants, items traditionally sold at the Plant Sale include cookbooks and gardening supplies such as shovels, rakes, picks, planters and baskets. There will also be a bucket raffle during the fundraiser.
The ESGC recently held its April meeting with 37 members and friends coming out to the monthly event. Those attending received individual gardening gloves and vegetable seed packets. A presentation from Judy Riffee on "Rewarding Results from Roses" took place during the meeting.
The emphasis of the discussion was well-known rose varieties in the United States, including Hybrid Tea, Miniatures, Landscaping Roses, David Austin English Roses, and Knockout Roses. The group talked about the challenges of raising roses in the Elkins area, which included the weather, planting location, nutrition, bugs, and disease. The groups also discussed the rooting and cutting of roses, including cutting methods, use of rooting hormones, and time to root.
Donna Isner and Joann Gabel also presented Yards of the Month awards for Elkins residents during the meeting. Those awards went to Marie Aughtry, Bill Stump, Elliot Sanders, Jim Sayres and Joann Gabel.
