EAST DAILEY -- A Randolph County man is facing multiple gun charges after allegedly shooting at cats in his yard.
Seth Thomas Dewitt, 33, has been charged with nine counts of being a person prohibited from possessing firearms. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $40,000 cash-only bond set by Magistrate Michael Dyer.
According to the criminal complaint, prepared by Deputy T.J. Knotts, he and Capt. A.B. Beverly investigated a "shots fired" call in the East Dailey area on April 26. At the scene, they spoke with Dewitt, the resident, who told them "nobody had discharged a firearm around his residence."
Officers then went to the caller's address, where the caller provided a written sworn statement, reading in part, "I heard gun shots in my living room. I looked outside and saw a man shooting a small pistol which was pointed toward the driveway," the complaint states.
Deputies then returned to Dewitt's residence, where they observed him "climbing into the attic on a ladder through the front door," according to the complaint. Dewitt then told the officers "he was attempting to conceal the firearms" and "that he was a convicted felon."
In the attic, officers found nine guns, including four pistols, four rifles and one shotgun. Dewitt also allegedly told officers he fired "a Berretta pistol towards the direction of cats in his yard to scare them off," the complaint states.
Police found that Dewitt had several felony charges in Florida, including possession of a short-barreled gun, rifle or machine gun; possession of controlled substances; and armed burglary of a dwelling, according to the complaint.
