ELKINS -- For the third consecutive year, Our Town Inc. will host a Scavenger Hunt for children in downtown Elkins.
This year's hunt is scheduled for May 11 and will begin at the Seneca Mall Atrium. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and is recommended for children preschool through the fifth grade.
"We have done three Scavenger Hunts in the past and we keep getting asked to do more," Our Town volunteer Bobbi Trimboli told The Inter-Mountain. "We are doing one Scavenger Hunt this year and it will be the one on May 11. We are hoping to have a big turnout and that people come and have fun, which they always seem to do."
Children accompanied by an adult will join Our Town volunteers at the Atrium for the start of the hunt. While there, the participants will hear a story, pick up a scavenger hunt bag, a pencil, and a clue sheet before heading out to various downtown businesses.
"We average between 60 to 70 kids at these events," said Trimboli. "We have fun doing it for them and they have fun participating. And that's what is part of Our Town's mission, putting together enjoyable activities for the families in our community."
Approximately 11 businesses have signed on to participate in the Scavenger Hunt. At each stop, children will receive a prize and a clue for the hunt. Upon completion of the hunt, children will gather in the Atrium for a special activity and tasty treat.
Trimboli said she hopes the event will expose people to the businesses in downtown Elkins, especially some of the newer ones that recently opened.
"This event exposes people to what is downtown, and maybe something they've never seen before," Trimboli said. "We are hoping to sell the merchants downtown, particularly the new stores. We want to make people aware of where they are, what they do, and what they're merchandise is, so that they will come back downtown and do a little shopping. We hope this is a beneficial activity for everyone."
Our Town gave a special appreciation to Atrium at the Seneca Mall and the Mossy Merchant for supporting the event. Trimboli mentioned several volunteers with Our Town, who have been instrumental in putting the Scavenger Hunt together.
"Cindy Stemple, Paula Marco and Kathryn Allred did all the initial planning for the event," said Trimboli. "We have a lot of talented people in Our Town and they all have something to offer… Jane Wamsley and Linda Wilmoth often volunteer to be Our Town's cookie makers, so they are making homemade cookies for the kids to take home with them when they come back and do their final project."
