Volunteers sought for service on United Way Day of Action

ELKINS -- The Tygart Valley United Way announced this week that it is currently seeking volunteers for the sixth annual Day of Action.
Each year, United Ways across the country come together to celebrate the first day of summer with a nationwide day of volunteer service.
"Right now we have eight non-profits registered to participate in this year's Day of Action," said JoLynn Powers, Regional Engagement Director for the Tygart Valley United Way. "We've been working on signing up organizations for the past couple of weeks, and now we are recruiting volunteers to help the non-profits. They're the ones who will be doing the volunteering labor during the event."
The special volunteer initiative will be held in Tygart Valley's five-county region that includes Randolph, Marion, Taylor, Barbour and Tucker counties. Organizations from each county will host volunteers on June 21 from noon to 4 p.m. Kick-off events are scheduled for Elkins and Fairmont at 11 a.m.
"Day of Action is an initiative we look forward to each year," said Tygart Valley United Way Chief Executive Officer Brett White. "Having over 30 projects take place in our five-county region is truly a testament to the power of our communities."
The Randolph County Senior Center, Meals on Wheels Randolph County, Randolph County Family Resource Network, Randolph Climb, Randolph-Tucker Children's Advocacy Center, Randolph County Humane Society, and the Kump Education Center are some of the local organizations already signed up for Day of Action.
"Agencies can still join, but we are working on volunteers now," said Powers. "Many of the organizations are doing painting and power washing, so we need volunteers who will go to different organizations and help with things like that."
This will be the sixth annual Day of Action event hosted by the Tygart Valley United Way. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and lunch before starting their projects.
"We are so grateful for all our volunteers who show up in force to make positive change in our communities," said Casey Gilbert, TVUW Community Impact Director. "We encourage businesses, teams, friends, families and civic groups to sign up together and kick off the summer helping others."
