ELKINS -- The Elkins Lions Club demonstrated admiration for local teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.
The club, in collaboration with Mark Rosencrance with the Elkins High School Guidance Department, orchestrated a special celebration on Wednesday, May 15. Club members gathered in the early hours of the morning to prepare bagged lunches for the dedicated teachers and staff of Elkins High School.
Reflecting on the initiative, the club's First Vice President Kenny Weese emphasized the profound impact teachers have on the community.
"Teachers take money out of their own pockets to educate the children of our community which in return benefits everyone, so as a club we are happy to recognize their hard work," Weese said.
With the celebration, the Elkins Lions Club officially acknowledged the multifaceted roles teachers play as mentors, role models and sources of inspiration.
"Their tireless efforts create environments where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential," a Lions Club press release states.
Teacher Appreciation Week, with its roots tracing back to 1953, holds historical significance. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt played a pivotal role in advocating for a dedicated day to honor teachers. Prior to her involvement, scattered state-level celebrations existed, but a unified recognition was lacking. It's believed that a teacher from either Wisconsin or Arkansas reached out to the First Lady, catalyzing the establishment of a nationally recognized day of appreciation.
As the Elkins community came together to celebrate their educators, the event served as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring the individuals who shape the future generation.
"We celebrate you for being the heart of education and for your role in shaping a brighter future!" Weese said.
