ELKINS -- Harman High School student Colleena Lewis was recently selected as one of 55 state and territory winners in the 2024 Doodle for Google student competition.
Lewis, a freshman at Harman, submitted a surgeon themed Doodle for the contest, which is for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. The competition allowed students across the United States to create their own version of the Google logo inspired by the prompt "My wish for the next 25 years…"
"I am so proud of Colleena, she always tries her best in art class and her works are always very creative and show good craftsmanship," said Harman High School art teacher Natalie Josimovich. "Colleena's Doodle represents her wish to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, and she actually sculpted it out of clay."
Google is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024 and this is the 16th straight year that the Doodle for Google competition has been held. The National Winner of the competition will take home a $55,000 college scholarship and their school will receive a $50,000 tech package toward the establishment or improvement of a computer lab or technology program.
Voting for a National Winner got under way on May 22 and will continue through June 4. To vote for Lewis, go to https://doodles.google.com/d4g/. The public vote will determine the contest finalists and an eventual winner.
"It's unfortunate that the Randolph County Board of Education has decided to remove the art program from Harman School, even though we have talented and serving students as shown by Colleena's first place artwork in the Doodle for Google contest," said Josimovich. "I just don't understand it. Our students deserve art, music, and everything else that the other schools in the county receive. The board's decision needs to be reconsidered."
Back in April a group of students from Harman High School were awarded a $2,500 check for their second place finish in the "NO School Spirits PSA Contest." Josimovich helped the group make a video for the contest that promoted not drinking and driving. Earlier this year the Randolph County BOE decided to remove the art program from Harman School.
The five National Finalists for the Doodle for Google contest will be announced in late May. One of the finalists will have their Doodle featured on the Google homepage for a day.
