Crews get facility ready for summer

ELKINS – The Randolph County Commission provided an update about the Randolph County Community Pool and Splash Pad during its regular meeting this week at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
During the reports section of the meeting, Commissioner David Kesling discussed the current state of the pool/splash pad, which will be entering its second year of operation at the Elks Lodge.
Kesling talked about the work that has been done during the last three days and provided a power-point presentation depicting some of the most recent activities at the facility.
"We started working on getting the pool ready for the upcoming season on Tuesday," Kesling said. "We had workers from Dan Hill Construction come in and take the cover off and clean the inside of the pool completely. Because we had to change one of the kiddie slides at the pool last year. The cover didn't exactly fit like it was supposed to. So we had a lot of leaves under the tarp that needed to be swept out. The workers pushed all the leaves down to one end of the pool and took them out when they drained the old water out."
After plans fell through for a smaller slide last summer, a bigger slide featuring a giant bear holding a fish was put in its place. Due to the bear slide being so much larger than the original, the pool cover didn't properly fit the pool.
On Wednesday, the entire pool was cleaned and power-washed, and small repairs were made to minor things around the facility.
"The pool was cleaned and it looks as good as new," Kesling said. "After cleaning the pool, the workers went around and fixed some minor stuff that happened over the winter. Things are looking great now."
The Beverly Volunteer Fire Department came to the facility on Thursday and filled the pool with water. The splash pad was also turned on to make sure all the fixtures were in working order from a year ago.
"The pool is now in working order and we have de-winterized the splash pad," Kesling said. "We will be opening up on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. As of Tuesday, we've already had 20 parties at the pool booked for the season."
The pool and splash pad hosted more than 7,000 visitors last summer, and Kesling expects that number to rise in 2024.
"We had a little bit of a slow start last year with the heater not working in the pool," he noted. "But from the start this year, the pool is going to be ready to go on Memorial Day weekend. The heater has already been tested and the Health Department will be up next week to make sure everything is ready to go. We have all of our lifeguards and concession stand workers from last year coming back, so we are anticipating a great year."
