ERCC needs volunteers for Auxiliary

ELKINS — Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center is looking for volunteers to join the organization’s auxiliary. ERCC’s auxiliary evolved from the auxiliary that was formed by Memorial General Hospital

(MGH) in 1960. Elkins Convalescent Hospital (ECH) was established as part of Memorial General Hospital in 1968.

In 1988 Elkins Convalescent Hospital became a free-standing organization known as Elkins

Regional Convalescent Center (ERCC) The auxiliary then performed duties for ERCC. It was formed to hold fundraisers, visit with residents, and run the gift shop. However, organizations around the nation are struggling to find volunteers, and ERCC is no exception.

“We are seeing a decline in volunteerism across the board,” Shaver said. “People are very busy, and a lot of them don’t have time to volunteer.”

“But, volunteerism is so very important to organizations everywhere, and volunteers benefit from that service too,” she added.

The residents benefit from the volunteers’ service as these helpers can work with staff to organize events and fun activities to brighten the spirit at the center. Also, spending time with the residents helps keep them engaged and active.

This act of charity benefits the volunteers as well since it can provide people with a purpose –helping others. Volunteering can also increase self-confidence because it gives the volunteer a sense of accomplishment.

Adding to the countless benefits, volunteering will increase one’s social skills, expand the volunteers’ relationships within the community, and help the volunteers connect with others in the area.

To join the Auxiliary, contact Grace Roy at 304-636-1391 ext. 220 or visit ERCC’S website for more information.

Starting at $3.92/week.
