Local Community Corrections efforts to receive funding

ELKINS — Community Corrections programs in Randolph, Upshur, Tucker and Pocahontas counties will receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in state grant funding.

Gov. Jim Justice announced this week that he has awarded $5,532,553 in West Virginia Community Corrections Grant program funds to 30 projects statewide.

Local grants will include:

The Randolph County Commission will receive $100,000 to be utilized for the continued operation of the Community Corrections program in Randolph County.

The Upshur County Commission was awarded $161,500 for a community corrections program in Upshur and Lewis counties.

The Tucker County Commission will receive $168,000 for the community corrections program in Tucker County.

The Pocahontas County Commission was awarded $51,000 to be used for the continued operation of a community corrections program in Pocahontas County.

The West Virginia Community Corrections Grant Program is intended to provide a means for communities to develop, establish and maintain community-based corrections programs to provide the judicial system with sentencing alternatives for those offenders who may require less than institutional custody. 

The funds are administered by the Justice and Community Services (JCS) Section of the West Virginia Division of Administrative Services (DAS).

The five biggest individual grants include:

The Logan County Commission was awarded $475,000 for the continued operation of a community corrections program in Logan, Boone, Lincoln, and Mingo counties.

The Wayne County Commission will receive $450,000 for a community corrections program in Wayne and Cabell counties.

The Wood County Commission was awarded $320,500 for a community corrections program in Wood, Jackson, Roane, Pleasants, and Ritchie counties.

The Marshall County Commission will receive $300,000 for a community corrections program in Marshall, Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Tyler, and Wetzel counties.

The Mercer County Commission was awarded $287,500 for a community corrections program in Mercer County.

In addition to grants to county commissions across the state, Justice also announced two additional awards, including:  

$150,000 for the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services, which will be used hire a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator; and

$100,000 for the West Virginia CASA Association, which is responsible for providing resources, support, and technical assistance to 10 local CASA programs throughout West Virginia.
