Details released about officer’s death

ELKINS -- As friends and family decorated a fallen officer's police cruiser with flowers and black balloons on Saturday, the Elkins Police Department released details about the patrolman's death.
The following press statement was released by Elkins Police Chief Travis Bennett:
"(On Friday) the Elkins Police Department suffered a devastating loss, as one of our officers took his own life. My deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Patrolman First Class Ramon Goux.
"To Ramon's family: Thank you for making him the person he was and thank you for sharing him with us. We are all better people and better police officers for having him as a part of our department family. Also, know that this department is here to stand beside you and support you no matter what.
"To the officers of the Elkins Police Department: We have been through a lot together over the years. We will get through this too and we will get through it together. We will get through it by leaning on each other, supporting, and taking care of each other.
"To the citizens of Elkins and the surrounding communities: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the overwhelming support and love that you have shown us. It is an honor and pleasure to serve and protect you.
Ramon, We love you and we will miss you every day! Rest easy brother, we've got it from here."
On Friday night at approximately 10 p.m., Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon released the following statement:
"One June, 14, 2024, at approximately 11:36 hours, Deputy R.C. Hebb responded to the Allegheny Highway near Eagles Nest Road on 33 East outside of Elkins for a suspicious vehicle call. While Hebb was en route, a caller advised the vehicle appeared to have a window that appeared to be shot out.
"Once on scene, Deputy Hepp approached the car and discovered the victim with what appeared to be an apparent gunshot wound. EMS units and Deputies S.D. Kyle and S.R. Davis arrived to assist. The victim did not survive.
"This incident is under investigation by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, The Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team.
"The Randolph County Sheriff's Office would like to express our sincere sympathy, condolences and prayers to the family and friends of our lost brother and to the Elkins Police Department during this tragic time."
Goux was sworn in as an Elkins City Police officer in April 2021.
