Siler wants more details from Elbon

ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission voted this week to move a deputy from part-time duty to full-time, but the Commission President told the sheriff he wanted to "see better numbers" to justify the move.

The Commission approved Sheriff Rob Elbon's recommendation for Deputy J. L. Wolfe to be moved from part-time to full-time employment effective July 1. Wolfe has been working as a part-time deputy for the Randolph County Sheriff's Department for several months.

Elbon, who spoke to the Commission on the matter during Tuesday's meeting, said Wolfe's salary as a certified officer would be $47,133 annually, or $22.66 per hour, and would include full benefits.

Before the Commission voted, Commission President Cris Siler told Elbon he wanted to see better results from the Sheriff's Office to warrant the promotion.

"I wanna see better numbers out of your all's office," Siler said. "The problem is the numbers you all produced, it doesn't really justify more manpower, and that's my concern. I'd like to see more activity showing that we're justified in putting more people out there on the road."

Elbon responded that he'd like to have a meeting with Siler to discuss how the Commission want the numbers to be calculated.

"Once we do that, I think you'll see that the numbers are better," Elbon said. "It's just that we need to be on the same page as far as what you're looking for and what numbers we're producing."

The Commission then voted unanimously to approve Wolfe being moved to full-time. On Tuesday the Commission also voted to approve:

∫ Ratification of the proclamation for lowering of the Courthouse flag in honor of Joe Martin III.

∫ Approval of a support letter to the Highlands Trail Foundation in their efforts to apply for a grant.

∫ Approval of IOOF Lodge No. 62's use of the sidewalk in front of the Wees Annex for Mountain State Forest Festival Grand Feature Parade seating.

∫ Approval of a new hire for Community Corrections.

∫ Approval of a 5% wage increase for Community Corrections employees for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

The next Commission meeting will be Wednesday, July 3 at 1:30 p.m.
