Community Cakewalk event will benefit Meals on Wheels

ELKINS -- Citizens Promoting Community will host its second cakewalk of the summer today at the Citizens Bank of West Virginia customer parking lot.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Proceeds taken in from the cakewalk will go to support Randolph County's Meals on Wheels Program.

"This week's cakewalk will benefit Meals on Wheels and will run until 8 p.m., or until we run out of cakes," Citizens Promoting Community secretary Paula Marco told The Inter-Mountain. "We have a beneficiary for each of the cakewalks we have and the last one supported Randolph County Climb. The cakewalk scheduled for July 26 will be for Elkins Area Bands."

Citizens Promoting Community has raised more than $10,000 for various community organizations since its inception in 2021. 

"The cakewalks have gone great the past few years," said Marco. "We have regular people who come to each and every one and have a lot of people who show up to support whoever the beneficiary is for that particular week. We had so many people show up for our first event of the year that we had to expand the cakewalk circle."

Those attending will not only have a chance to win a great cake, but some cash as well through a 50/50 drawing held at each event. Tickets for the 50/50 will be available for purchase and the winning number will be drawn at 7:30 p.m.

"We've been having kids as young as preschool to older adults in their 80s coming out to the cakewalks," said Marco. "And sometimes we have gift certificates from local businesses or local restaurants to give away. We really don't know from week-to-week what we will have other than a lot of cakes. We want to thank Citizens Bank for generously allowing us to use their parking lot for these event."

Citizens Promoting Community was recently established as a non-profit and currently has close to 10 members.

"We are always looking for volunteers to join our organization," Marco said. "The more people we have involved the better."

Meals on Wheels, meanwhile, has 13 volunteer board members, three paid part-time employees, and more than 40 volunteers, most of whom have served for more than nine years. The organization's goal is to make sure that eligible seniors receive hot, nutritious meals at an affordable cost.

Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot meals to more than 80 clients every weekday without any compensation. For more information on the MOW program, call 304-636-4919.
