ELKINS -- A local man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly giving police a false name and driver's license at the WalMart fuel station.
According to a Randolph County Sheriff's Office release, at approximately 9:48 a.m., Deputy J. Wolfe was entering the station when he observed a car sitting at the gas pumps with a cracked windshield and a West Virginia State Inspection sticker that had been partially scratched off.
While approaching the vehicle, Wolfe noticed a male subject, who was later identified as Mitchell Allen Williams, 33, slumped over in the driver's seat. According to the Facebook post, Williams appeared to wake up when Wolfe asked if he was OK. Williams advised the deputy that he was on his phone.
Fearing that Williams may have been driving under the influence, Wolfe asked Williams for his name and he advised that he was someone else and that his birthday was the year 1998, according to the release.
"He stuttered and his response was delayed as he had to think," Wolfe wrote in the criminal complaint.
The deputy contacted 911 and was advised that the person Williams was saying he was, had blue eyes. The release states that Wolfe then asked Williams to remove his sunglasses and observed that he had hazel eyes.
A friend of Williams then arrived on scene and Williams asked him to tell the deputy his name, which he was unable to do. According to the release, Williams then handed the deputy a driver's license featuring a name other than his. The photo on the driver's license did not appear to be Williams, and he was unable to give the deputy the birthday listed on the license, which was suspended.
According to the release, Williams eventually gave the deputy his real name and, after running a check with 911, it was learned that Williams had active warrants for battery, petit larceny, improper registration, no insurance, fleeing on foot, and fleeing in a vehicle.
Williams, 33, was transported to Randolph County Magistrate Court for arraignment on a charge of obstructing an officer. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, with bonds in both Randolph County ($1,000 cash only) and Upshur County ($7,500 surety/cash).
