Speaker to focus on South Africa
ELKINS — The Kump Education Center will host a free international lecture about South Africa this week, featuring a university lecturer from Saudi Arabia.
The presentation, “South Africa, A World Between Two Oceans,” will be offered on Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at the Kump House in Elkins. The event is free and open to the public.
Hosted by Nasra Adan, a visiting lecturer from Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the lecture will share Adan and her family’s experiences and photos from a recent family trip to South Africa. The family also visited Pakistan this year.
Kump House Executive Director Dr. Heather Biola said the event will focus on the kinds of things someone might enjoy as a tourist, such as food.
“She says it’s the best seafood she’s ever had,” Biola told The Inter-Mountain. “It’s from two very different oceans.”
Adan’s lecture will feature a power-point presentation and time for questions.
Married to Jacob Zuboy, formerly of Elkins and a consultant with Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Saudi Arabia, Adan and her family visits Elkins every summer. Last year, Adan spoke at the Kump House about Saudi Arabia, showing photos and explaining the culture.
“Last summer, Nasra presented a dazzling collection of photographs from Saudi that made me realize that human culture in the rest of the world is changing much faster than I thought,” Biola wrote in a recent column in The Inter-Mountain.
Originally from Canada, Adan has traveled the world extensively, living in China, India, Korea, Japan, Kenya, and currently, Saudi Arabia. A language arts specialist, Adan speaks seven languages besides her native English, including Chinese, Korean, Somali, Arabic, French, Swahili and Spanish. She teaches essay writing at the college level, and she has taught reading, listening and speaking as a second language.
