Building a Playground

Lions volunteer at Beverly Elementary

ELKINS -- A group of Tygart Valley Lions Club members volunteered their time to put together a brand-new playground play system at Beverly Elementary School.

The huge, gold-and-blue colored play system was shipped to the school this week, and its construction became a Tygart Valley Lions Club service project.

"I've got kids at the school so I volunteered to help with it," Sam Mauzy of the Lions Club told The Inter-Mountain early Friday afternoon at the school.

"We had a Lions Club service meeting last night. I asked for some help and a bunch of them came down today.

"We tore out the old equipment Monday and Tuesday, and we started putting this in yesterday."

Amanda Reese, president of the Beverly Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, told The Inter-Mountain that the existing playground equipment at the school was "very old."

She said $55,000 has been raised by the Playground Committee for the project, but organizers still need to raise $40,000 to complete the playground.

"We raised part of the money, and we had a federal grant, so we wanted to buy the big piece now, so we didn't lose that money," Mauzy said. "So we still have the swing sets, mulch and border to raise money for to finish out the playground."

Helping Mauzy assemble the play system Friday were Steve Currence, the current Tygart Valley Lions Club president, and club members Al Scalia, Andy Fitzgibbon and John Schmidt.

"This is going to be a great thing for the kids," Currence told The Inter-Mountain. "Sam sent an email to us all about the project, and we were happy to help."

The concrete to secure the play system was scheduled to be poured later Friday afternoon.

The play system was purchased from West Virginia Playground Builders and Resources of Hurricane. The company's Dustin Delligatti delivered the system to Beverly Elementary and helped with its installation.
