Elkins traffic stop leads to drug charge
ELKINS — A Randolph County man was arrested Tuesday after officers allegedly found a total of 3.49 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.
Scott Dale Reckart was charged with possession with intent to distribute. He was transported to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail to await arraignment.
According to a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy J. Wolfe was conducting road patrol along Kennedy Street and North Randolph Avenue in Elkins on Tuesday at about 2:55 p.m.
Wolfe observed a gold Jeep Liberty traveling north toward Central Supply, with an expired registration sticker, the release states.
When Wolfe activated his vehicle’s emergency lights to attempt a traffic stop, the driver turned onto Elkins Avenue and began pulling away, according to the release. “Once I got behind the vehicle, the driver pulled over on Charles Street,” Wolfe wrote, adding that while speaking to the driver, Reckart, “I detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.”
Reckart allegedly told Wolfe one of his relatives had a medical marijuana card. Wolfe had Reckart exit the vehicle, and asked to pat him down. Reckart reached into his pocket and “removed a small container containing marijuana (1.12 ounces) and a smoking device with residue,” the release reads.
Officers than searched the vehicle, finding a pouch containing a THC gummy; a Christmas cookie cutter containing leaves of marijuana (15 ounces) and a pair of trimming shears; two black buckets containing marijuana buds (24.4 ounces); and a black garbage bag containing trimmed marijuana buds (15.42 ounces).
Reckart told officers he received the marijuana “from a guy,” the release states. The total weight of the seized marijuana was 3.49 pounds.
