Volunteers in 3 counties lend a hand

ELKINS -- Volunteers came out to support the community and lend a hand during the sixth annual Tygart Valley United Way Day of Action Friday.
The event was rescheduled from June, after being postponed due to extreme heat. Local volunteers took part in projects in Randolph, Barbour, and Tucker counties on Friday.
The annual Day of Action is a volunteer service project designed to foster service and volunteering in the community. Individual volunteers and participants from companies and organizations spent the day Friday helping local non-profit agencies.
After gathering at the Elkins City Park for a kickoff event Friday morning, local volunteers made their way to the Randolph County Humane Society, the Randolph County Homeless Shelter, Tyrand Ministries, the Randolph-Tucker Children's Advocacy Center, the Randolph County Senior Center and Meals on Wheels.
Project work was also conducted in Elkins City Park, where pizza and t-shirts were given to participants. Painting, cleaning and improvements were provided at the Randolph-Tucker Child Advocacy Center, while those working at the Randolph County Humane Society worked on various projects, including putting up a new fence for the facility.
Volunteers also helped refresh the Born Learning Trail at the Elkins City Park with new paint.
For the first time ever, a Day of Action service project was scheduled and completed in Tucker County, as volunteers helped with improvements at the Tucker County Senior Center. The Barbour County service project this year was at the Junior City Building.
Before this year's event, the Tygart Valley United Way announced that it would be moving the annual event to the month of September for the coming years. Having the event in September helps organizers avoid any heat issues in June, and conflicts that may arise with West Virginia Day.
